How we irrigate our golf course environmentally friendly and use resources sustainably.

Water is as central to a golf course as the turf itself – and in times of drier summers it is a topic that goes beyond looks and playing conditions. In Moorfleet we have been working for years to keep the site's water consumption as low as possible, without giving up the quality of greens and fairways.
Basic principle
The approach is unspectacular: rainwater is collected on site and reused for irrigation, sprinklers run preferably at off-peak times and only where actually needed. Greens are watered specifically, based on measurements, not on a fixed schedule. Edge areas are deliberately kept more extensively and thereby contribute to biodiversity, rather than being treated as irrigated ornamental lawn.
Two factors help. First, the location right next to natural areas, which is designed for care. Second, a compact short course, which per played hole requires less irrigated area than a classic 18-hole layout. Sustainability on a golf course is rarely a single measure, but the sum of small decisions – irrigation, mowing frequency, care of the edges. In Moorfleet we try to move this sum year by year towards "less consumption, more diversity".
